Richard Chandler letter to Sirs, and reply, 1799.

Chandler writes to Sirs, addressed to Messrs. Cadell & Davies, 26 Aug. 1799, asking them to search their warehouse for plates connected with his work, Travels in Greece, citing a great demand for the book; also, on the folded page, their reply, 18 Oct. 1799, informing him that they are unable to locate the plates in question. Includes integral envelope.

Richard Chandler was a classical scholar and author, best known for his travels in Asia Minor and Greece. Born in Hampshire and educated at Queen's College, Oxford, and Magdalen College, he published several notable translations and works on classical Greece, and was commissioned by the Society of Dilettanti to command an expedition to Asia Minor and Greece. He collected valuable notes and materials, including pieces of the Parthenon, and co-authored several books on the expedition's discoveries...

The British publishing and bookselling firm of Cadell & Davies was established in 1793 as a joint partnership between Thomas Cadell (1773-1836) and William Davies (d. 1820). The pair inherited the business from Cadell's father, Thomas Cadell the elder (1742-1802), and carried on his legacy as a leader of the London book trade.
